The First Liberal traces the development of the Liberal tradition that began the day Jesus said, “Love Thy Neighbor”, and was continued by John Locke and Baruch Spinoza, picked up by Thomas Jefferson (Declaration of Independence) who shared it with John Adams and James Madison (Bill of Rights) who infected Benjamin Franklin, who passed it on to Voltaire, (The Rights of Man), and it was creatively interpreted by William Gladstone, then broadly applied in the USA by FDR!
Although the pronouncements in the book are attributed to Jesus, and those “quotes” are the philosophical building blocks of this progression, the book does not deal with any reverential aspects of the subject. (It’s not about religion; it’s about politics!)
